Formal wear is made for special occasions, but parties often come with spills, splashes, and other mishaps. Even without an obvious accident, normal wear can leave delicate fabrics looking less than their best.

Many formal garments are made from luxurious materials such as taffeta, moiré, satin, organza, metallic fabrics, silk, and velvet. These fabrics need extra care, both while you're wearing them and when it's time to clean them.

Here are a few simple tips to help keep your formal wear looking its best:

• Treat stains as soon as possible to help prevent permanent damage.
• Blot spills instead of rubbing them. Rubbing delicate fabrics like organza can cause the fibers to shift, tear, or damage the surface.
• If something spills on velvet, gently shake off any excess liquid and let the fabric air dry. Avoid blotting or pressing on damp areas.
• Satin (especially smooth satin), taffeta, and metallic fabrics can snag or show abrasion easily. Be careful around jewelry, handbags, and rough surfaces.
• Apply perfume, deodorant, hairspray, and makeup before getting dressed. Make sure they're completely dry to help prevent staining or fabric damage.
• After your event, have your formal wear professionally cleaned before storing it. Cleaning removes stains and body oils that can set over time and helps keep your garment looking its best for the next special occasion.
