Extend the Life of Your Garments
Does Dry Cleaning Wear Out Your Clothes? How Proper Cleaning Can Help Garments Last Longer
One of the questions we're often asked at Best Care is whether frequent dry cleaning or professional wet cleaning is hard on clothing.
It's a reasonable question, but the answer may surprise you.
Proper cleaning can actually help extend the life of your clothing.
The key word is proper. Garments need to be cleaned using the appropriate process for their fabric, construction, dyes, trims, and manufacturer's care instructions.
What Happens to Clothing While You Wear It?
Even when clothing doesn't look dirty, wearing it exposes the fabric to substances that can gradually affect the fibres.
These include:
- Perspiration
- Body oils
- Deodorant and cosmetics
- Food and beverages
- Dust and dirt
- Lotions and sunscreen
- Environmental odours and pollutants
Some of these soils are visible. Many aren't.
Body oils, for example, tend to accumulate around collars, cuffs, and underarms long before a garment looks noticeably dirty.
Dirt Can Actually Deteriorate Fabric
Think of tiny particles of dirt and grit as microscopic abrasives.
As they become embedded in fabric, movement and friction can cause them to rub against the fibres. Over time, that can contribute to wear.
Professional cleaning removes these accumulated soils rather than allowing them to remain in the garment.
Stains Don't Get Better with Age
Have a stain? Don't put the garment away and hope you'll deal with it later.
The longer some stains remain in fabric, the more difficult they can become to remove. Heat, light, and time can cause stains to oxidize or chemically change, sometimes making what was originally an invisible spill appear as yellow or brown discolouration months later.
If you know what caused a stain, tell us when you drop off your garment. That information can be extremely helpful to our stain removal technicians.
And resist the temptation to aggressively treat an expensive or delicate garment at home. The wrong stain remover can sometimes cause more damage than the original stain.
How Often Should You Clean Your Clothes?
There's no single rule that applies to every garment.
Something worn directly against your skin may require cleaning much more frequently than a jacket worn over several layers. Fabric, colour, climate, activity level, stains, odours, and the manufacturer's care instructions all play a role.
Instead of counting wears, inspect your clothing before putting it back in the closet.
If you notice stains, odours, perspiration, makeup, food, or visible soil, it's probably time for cleaning.
Always Clean Clothing Before Seasonal Storage
If there's one cleaning habit we'd encourage everyone to adopt, it's this:
Don't store dirty clothes for the season.
That winter coat may look reasonably clean when spring arrives, but after months of wear it can contain body oils, perspiration, road grime, food residue, and other soils.
The same applies to summer dresses, suits, sweaters, and special-occasion clothing.
Cleaning garments before long-term storage removes accumulated soils and stains and means everything is fresh and ready to wear when the next season arrives.
Professional Cleaning Is More Than "Dry Cleaning"
Not every garment that comes to Best Care is cleaned using the same process.
Depending on the fabric, construction, care label, and type of soil, we may use professional dry cleaning, wet cleaning, specialized stain removal, or other garment-specific techniques.
Our job is to determine the safest and most effective process for each individual item.
Not All Garment Care Is the Same
Professional garment care has changed enormously over the years.
Cleaning solutions, equipment, stain removal techniques, wet cleaning systems, pressing technology, and garment tracking have all evolved. The equipment a cleaner uses—and the knowledge of the people operating it—can make a significant difference.
At Best Care, we continually invest in modern equipment, environmentally responsible cleaning methods, technology, and ongoing education for our team.
We've been caring for Winnipeg wardrobes since 1970, but we're always learning something new.
The Most Sustainable Garment Is Often the One You Already Own
Taking proper care of clothing isn't just good for your wardrobe. It's also part of making more sustainable choices.
Cleaning stains before they become permanent, repairing a small tear, replacing a zipper, or professionally maintaining a quality coat can add years to a garment's useful life.
The longer we can help you enjoy the clothing you already own, the less frequently it needs to be replaced.
Clean it. Care for it. Repair it. Wear it longer.
And, as always...
Thank you for wearing clothes!
